9/7 Green Gables, Cavendish, Prince Edward Island

I arrived on Prince Edward Island yesterday, driving across the Confederation Bridge.  Luckily, it was a calm and beautifully sunny day, so no worries about wind on this eight mile long bridge.  This bridge joins the provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, referred to commonly as PEI.  They don't charge you getting onto the island, but you do have to pay to get off.  I am planning on taking the ferry, so that will cost me about $95.  Cheaper to take the bridge, but more scenic on the ferry, I am hoping.

I got my second wind this afternoon after my long drive and not feeling well yesterday, so off I went to see the Green Gables house upon which Lucy Maud Montgomery based her novel, Anne of Green Gables.  Montgomery never lived here, but she did visit relatives at this house.  It was purchased and furnished as it is described in the novels, and is now a national park.

The typewriter and some of the belongings of the author.

Definitely green gables!

This is the parlor, furnished as described in the novels.

 This is the dining room.

And what is supposed to be Anne's bedroom.

And Marilla's bedroom.

After a pastry bought in the café, I headed out to another part of the national park, along the northern coast.  This is not quite open ocean.  The Gulf of St. Lawrence is in the distance, with Quebec to the north and Newfoundland to the northeast.  (Nova Scotia is to the southeast, around the east end of the island.)

In the novel, Anne described the red cliffs against the blue sky and blue water.

Some cormorants sunning themselves.

It's supposed to rain tomorrow, but I'll be heading out to visit the house when Lucy Maud Montgomery was born and more of the town.

  1. I love the Anne of Green Gables books and would love to visit the Maritime Provinces someday, and especially PEI.
