7/20 Fort Worden SP, Port Townsend, WA

This is a very nice state park in the northeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  Fort Worden was built at the turn of the last century to protect Puget Sound from invaders because it was such an important shipping channel.  Moat of the original buildings are existing and used for various purposes, as you can see from the sign below.  You can rent a house or a room in a hotel, or even in a barracks.  You can also attend a class or attend a conference.  There is a dining room and other things you would find in a hotel, but there is also a museum and campoground and beach area that has a Marine Science Center and cafe.

First, the campground is down a hill and closer to Puget Sound.  You can see the lighthouse in the distance.

There is also a good-sized fishing dock and a swimming beach.
The campground is to the left of the road to the lighthouse.

The campground!  I like that the spaces are paved and spread out.  Most of the sites in this section are full hookups, also.  The site I chose is closer to the pier and marine museums.  Surprisingly, the sites farther out on the peninsula have poorer views because they are tucked behind artillery bunkers.  These sites have a full view to the sound.

Even with the bluff behind my motorhome, I was still able to get a good satellite TV signal.

The lighthouse guards the point of land that the fort stands on.  Ships coming past here must turn to the right or southeast to get to the Port of Seattle.

This is part of the swimming beach. You can see the campground in the distance.

You can also rent a kayak here.

Most of the fort is up the hill on the bluff. This is the central parade ground with houses and barracks lining both sides.

I did not take photos of the conference center or some of the other buildings, but this was a small restaurant/bar I thought looked interesting. There were a lot of people sitting outside last night just at dusk, but nothing showed up on the photo I took then.

And a last look at the lighthouse from the bluff.
