4/5 Picacho Peak, AZ

Picacho Peak is a unique-looking mountain about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson, along I-10.  It has been used as a landmark for thousands of years, from prehistoric times through the 1800s and 1900s.  It became a state park in 1968 and is very popular with hikers and climbers.

I have stayed here several times over the almost 13 years that I have been living and traveling full-time in my motorhome because the camping spaces are large and well-spread apart.  There are also great views of the mountain and the valley below, as well as the interstate highway in the distance.  For the past three years, the state park has had problems with water because its well has become salty, so it asks campers to bring water with them.  There is one rest room with showers available, and they are working to develop a desalination process for their water, but in the meantime, I have to limit my stays to 3-4 days because that is all I can bring water in for my personal needs.

This is what Picacho Peak looks like coming from the south.  Even though the highway seems close, you cannot hear the traffic noises from the campgrounds, so it is a quiet place to stay.

Following are some views to the north, south, and east of the campground.

Just a very pleasant place to stay for a few days!!
